The Silver Reed LK150 is a 6.5 mm mid-gauge, hand-driven knitting machine with 150 needles. It is light, compact and very approachable, and it is one of my favourite ways to introduce hand knitters to machine knitting because it works with yarns that feel familiar — particularly DK and worsted/Aran weights.
There is no punch card or electronic patterning system to learn. Needle selection is manual, which keeps the machine simple and gives you a really direct relationship with the fabric you are making.
The 6.5 mm spacing also makes the LK150 a much happier home for thicker and more characterful yarns than a standard-gauge machine. DK, worsted/Aran and some chunkier yarns can work well depending on their structure and how freely they travel through the machine.
I particularly like the LK150 for combining machine and hand knitting. You can make the larger areas of a garment quickly on the machine, then add hand-knit ribs, trims, yokes, texture or finishing afterwards. It is also a useful machine for experimenting with handspun and unusual yarns, provided the yarn suits the gauge and feeds smoothly.
If you are not sure whether your yarn stash is better suited to the LK150, the SK280 or another machine, get in touch. I would much rather help you choose the right gauge than sell you the wrong machine.
