 In-Depth Description

The Kromski Harp is a beautiful, affordable and incredibly versatile rigid heddle loom – and one of my absolute favourites to recommend. It’s easy to set up, beginner-friendly and folds away neatly, so you can start weaving within minutes and still pack it up when life needs the table back!

The loom is hand crafted from clear-finished European alder wood, with lovely turned details and scroll-like accents reminiscent of a real harp. It feels solid, smooth and very “proper loom” without being at all intimidating. The metal ratchet and pawl tension system gives you firm, reliable tension, which is especially important if you want to weave sturdy fabrics, tapestries or small rugs.

One of the cleverest features is hidden on the back: flip the loom over and you’ll find a built-in warping board. You simply slot the included pegs into the pre-drilled holes and you’ve suddenly got a full warping board ready to wind long warps for throws, blankets and multi-project warps. When you’re finished, you pop the pegs out and store them with the loom – no extra board to buy or mount on the wall.

The Harp offers both direct warping (with the clamp-on peg) for quick, straightforward projects, and indirect warping (with the pegs on the back) for longer or more complex warps. The rigid heddle makes shedding wonderfully intuitive – you simply move the heddle up and down to lift or lower the threads – and the included pick-up stick lets you start playing with simple patterns straight away.

As your confidence grows, the built-in second heddle block means you can explore:

  • Double-width weaving for blankets wider than your loom

  • Tubes, pockets and layered fabrics

  • More intricate patterning using two heddles

It’s very much a loom you can grow into over many years, rather than something you’ll outgrow after your first few scarves.

What It’s Good For

The Kromski Harp is a brilliant all-rounder for:

  • Scarves & wraps – soft, drapey fabrics from your favourite knitting yarns

  • Shawls & ponchos – especially on the 16" and 24" sizes

  • Cushion fronts & homewares – use your handspun and stash yarns in a really satisfying way

  • Baby blankets & throws – the 24" and 32" sizes are ideal for this

  • Simple tapestries & wall hangings – thanks to the strong metal ratchet and pawl

  • Fabric for sewing – particularly on the wider looms, for boxy tops, jackets and bags

  • Sample weaving and stash busting – great for testing colour combinations and yarn ideas

It’s also an excellent teaching loom. The folding frame makes it easy to transport to workshops or guild meetings, and the built-in warping board means you can demonstrate both direct and indirect warping on the same loom.

 Is It Right For Me?

Choose the Kromski Harp if:

  • You want one good rigid heddle loom that will carry you from your first ever warp right through to more adventurous techniques.

  • You like the idea of a folding loom that doesn’t take over the entire house and can be stored easily or taken to groups and holidays.

  • You’d love a loom that is beautiful to look at – the Harp genuinely looks like a piece of furniture, not a bit of workshop machinery.

  • You’re keen to explore double heddle weaving and longer warps without buying a separate warping board.

You might look at something smaller (like a very compact rigid heddle or frame loom) if:

  • You only have space for a tiny loom and don’t think you’ll ever want to weave wider than a scarf.

But for most people who want to properly dive into rigid heddle weaving, the Harp hits a lovely sweet spot of size, features and value.

 Choosing Your Width

All four widths share the same clever design; only the weaving width changes:

  • 8" – Perfect for scarves, narrow wraps, bands, table runners, stash-busting and sampling.

  • 16" – A wonderful all-round size for scarves, shawls, wraps and small homewares.

  • 24" – Great for wider wraps, baby blankets, cushion panels and yardage for sewing.

  • 32" – Ideal if you know you want to weave blankets, throws and bigger pieces; you can always weave smaller on a big loom, but not the other way around.

If you’re unsure, my usual advice is: choose the widest loom you can comfortably use and store. You can always weave a narrow project on a wide loom.

My Thoughts On The Kromski Harp Rigid Heddle Loom

I absolutely love this loom. It’s one of those rare pieces of equipment that is both beautiful and genuinely clever. The first time I flipped the Harp over and realised the back was actually a full warping board, I had that “oh, that’s genius!” moment. It also means if you’re tight on space, you’re not trying to squeeze an extra warping board onto your walls – everything lives neatly on the loom.

I recommend the Harp a lot to people who want their first “proper” weaving loom. The metal ratchet and pawl gives excellent tension, which is really important for enjoyable weaving and nice, even cloth. The folding mechanism is also surprisingly useful – you can fold it and lean it against a wall mid-project without everything going slack and sad.

I also love how well it plays with handspun yarn. The 8 dpi heddle that comes as standard is perfect for DK-ish knitting yarns and a lot of handspun. Add extra heddles in different dents and you can use everything from chunky art yarns to finer commercial yarns.

If you’re dreaming of weaving your own blankets, wraps, handwoven fabric for sewing, or just want a loom that will grow with you over time, the Kromski Harp is a wonderful companion.
