Louet Junior Drum Carder
The Louet Junior Drum Carder is a compact little workhorse for opening, blending and preparing fleece without giving over half your studio to a larger machine. Its 10cm (4in) working width makes it particularly lovely for thoughtful small batches, colour experiments and beautifully controlled batts.
It is built from waterproof birch plywood with a hard white HPL top layer, and Louet’s enclosed gear system keeps carding smooth and reassuringly simple. The 9:1 surface-speed ratio helps the two drums tease fibres apart efficiently, while the flexible nickel-plated steel teeth work gently through wool and other suitable fibres.
The Junior produces batts of approximately 40g and weighs around 6kg, so it is substantial enough to feel steady on the table while remaining pleasantly portable. It arrives fully assembled with an instruction manual, Deb Menz carding booklet, cleaning brush, doffer pin and table clamps.
Choose your carding cloth:
- 46 TPI: a beautifully open choice for farm fleece, longer or coarser fibres and textured art batts.
- 72 TPI: a versatile all-rounder for most wool, colour blending and everyday fibre preparation.
- 120 TPI: the extra-fine option for fine wool and delicate fibres where a smooth, refined preparation is wanted.
Please choose carefully: the carding-cloth density is built into the machine. Think about the fibres and style of batt you most enjoy making before selecting your TPI.
This is a wonderful carder for a spinner who wants proper Louet engineering in a smaller footprint – a tool ready for fleeces, gradients, joyful handfuls of colour and all the delicious possibilities waiting in your fibre stash.
